San Juan City Mayor Francisco Zamora said Tuesday he is not in favor of easing the National Capital Region’s (NCR) quarantine status to Modified General Community Quarantine (MGCQ) after the surge of coronavirus cases in the country and the threat of its more transmissible United Kingdom (UK) variant.

In my opinion, the GCQ status of Metro Manila should be maintained while the number of COVID-19 cases are not yet decreasing),” Zamora said in his statement.

The mayor said that as of January 25, there are only 41 active cases in San Juan but he still wants it to decrease further especially after confirmed cases of the much contagious UK variant of the virus were reported in the country.

We can still work and the economy is still running under GCQ. The vaccines will also be on its way so it is essential not to hurry in transitioning to MGCQ for the welfare of our citizens),” Zamora added.

The NCR mayors are set to meet on Tuesday evening to discuss their recommendation on NCR’s quarantine status next month.
