Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian is in favor of Constitutional or Charter change (Cha-Cha) but only as far as the economy is concerned.

Citing the reasons pointed out by Finance Sec. Carlos Dominguez III during a Senate hearing, Gatchalian said the country’s current Constitution is “restrictive” at a time when “we have to be very competitive.”

“I watched the interview of or the testimony of Secretary Dominguez in the Senate wherein he was saying nga na (that) in this age…we have to be competitive,” the mayor said at the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum on Wednesday.

“Restrictive mechanisms should be lifted so that we can bring more capital into the country,” he added.

His lawmaker brothers — Sen. Win Gatchalian and Rep. Wes Gatchalian — have “filed for economic changes to the constitution.” Gatchalian said he “subscribed to that” but also “only for economic” reasons.

“I’ve also been categorical about that when I was in Congress,” added Gatchalian, who served as Valenzuela City’s 1st District representative from 2007 to 2012.
